The sport of Schutzhund originated in the early 1900s as a breed suitability test
for the German Shepherd Dog. Today schutzhund is a competitive three phase sport
(Tracking, Obedience and Protection) that is intended to demonstrate the dog’s intelligence
and utility. A variety of other breeds now compete in this sport including but,
not limited to Dobermans, Malinois, Rottweilers and Boxers just, to name a few.
During a Schutzhund trial both you and your dog’s mental stability, endurance, structural
efficiency, willingness to work, courage, and trainability will be pushed to its
maximum. At any time the judge may dismiss a dog for showing poor temperament, including
fear or aggression. The goal of Schutzhund is to identify those dogs with the desired
genetic characteristics we want and need to pass on to the next generation.
